Study › Runes & Norse › Thor and Geirrod

The giant Geirrod made Loki bring Thor to his hall without his hammer. Armed only with the gifts of the giantess Grid, Thor beat him anyway.
Loki's promise
Loki, flying in Frigg's falcon cloak, was caught by the giant Geirrod, who starved him in a chest until Loki promised to bring Thor to his hall without his hammer or his belt of strength. Thor set out unarmed.
Grid and the river
On the way he stayed with the giantess Grid, who warned him of the trap and lent him her own belt of strength, her iron gloves and her staff. At the river Vimur the water rose around him, swelled by Geirrod's daughter Gjalp, until Thor threw a stone at her, saying that a river must be stopped at its source, and pulled himself to shore by a rowan tree — ever after called 'Thor's rescue'.
In Geirrod's hall
In Geirrod's hall Thor sat on a chair that suddenly rose toward the roof; he pushed back with Grid's staff and broke the backs of Geirrod's two daughters hidden beneath it. Then Geirrod threw a glowing lump of iron at him. Thor caught it in the iron gloves and flung it back through a pillar, through Geirrod, and into the wall behind.
