Megingjord, the Belt of Strength

Megingjord, the "Belt of Might", is the belt of Thor. When he buckles it on his strength doubles. With his iron gloves and his hammer, it makes him the champion of the gods.

What is Megingjord?

Megingjord, the 'Belt of Might', is the girdle of Thor. When he buckles it on, his already vast strength is doubled, and with it he can lift and hurl what no other being could so much as move.

The belt, the gloves and the hammer

With the belt Thor also wears Jarngreipr, a pair of iron gloves, without which he cannot safely grip the short handle of Mjollnir. The hammer, the belt and the gloves are the three things together that make him the champion of the gods.

The 10th-century poem Þórsdrápa calls Thor "the wearer of the strength-belt". When he set out to face the giant Geirröðr, the giantess Gríðr lent him a belt of strength, iron gloves and a staff, with which he crossed a flooding river and won the fight.

It belongs to Thor, with Mjolnir.
