Study › Runes & Norse › The Sword of Freyr

The sword of Freyr fought on its own, swinging itself against his foes. Freyr gave it away to win the giantess Gerd, and so he goes unarmed to Ragnarok.
What was the sword of Freyr?
Freyr once owned a sword so fine that it would fight on its own, swinging itself against his foes if only a wise hand set it loose. It was among the greatest weapons in all Asgard.
Why Freyr gave it away
But when Freyr fell in love with the giantess Gerd, he gave the sword to his servant Skirnir as the price of winning her. Because of that gift he will go weaponless into Ragnarok, and there the fire-giant Surtr will cut him down — a small act of love that costs the god his life at the end of the world.
