Surtr is the fire giant of Norse mythology, who guards Muspelheim with a sword brighter than the sun. At Ragnarok he kills the god Freyr and sets all nine worlds on fire.
Who is Surtr?
Surtr is the great fire giant who guards the flaming realm of Muspelheim, standing at its border with a sword that blazes brighter than the sun. He is older than the gods, a primal power of fire, and he waits at the edge of the world for the end of all things.
Surtr at Ragnarok
At Ragnarok, Surtr leads the sons of Muspel out of their burning land and rides across Bifrost, shattering the rainbow bridge beneath them. He slays the god Freyr, who long ago gave away his own sword for love. Then Surtr flings fire across the whole of creation, and the nine worlds are swallowed in flame — the burning from which a cleansed, reborn world will one day rise.
He guards Muspelheim and kills Freyr at Ragnarok.
