The runes of Maeshowe

Maeshowe on Orkney is a chambered tomb built around 2800 BCE. In the 12th century Norsemen broke into it and carved some 30 runic inscriptions on its walls, one of the largest groups of runes anywhere in Europe. Much of it is graffiti, as old as it is familiar: boasts of treasure, names, and "Ingigerth is the most beautiful of all women."
