Hildr and the Everlasting Battle

Hildr, whose name means "battle", is the valkyrie of a war that never ends. Each night she wakes the fallen, and each morning they fight again, until Ragnarok.

Who is Hildr?

Hildr — her name simply means 'battle' — is the valkyrie of a war that never ends. Snorri tells in Skáldskaparmál that she was the daughter of King Högni, and that Hedin carried her off while her father was away. Högni pursued them, and on an island the two armies met. Hildr went to her father to offer peace, but spoke so that he would not take it, and the armies fought all day. At night she walked the field and woke the dead with her magic, and in the morning they rose and fought again. So it goes on, day after day: the battle of the Hjadnings, which will last until Ragnarok.
