Gullinbursti, the Golden Boar

Gullinbursti, "Golden-Bristled", is the boar of Freyr, forged by the dwarves Brokk and Sindri. It runs through the air and over water faster than any horse, and its glowing bristles turn night to day.

What is Gullinbursti?

Gullinbursti, whose name means 'Golden-Bristled', is the boar of Freyr, forged by Brokk and Sindri from a pig's skin and gold. It can run through the air and over water faster than any horse, and the light of its glowing bristles turns the darkest night to day.

Gullinbursti and Freyr

Freyr rides it or harnesses it to his chariot. As a god of sun, field and fertility, it suits him to ride a beast that carries its own daylight wherever it goes.

It was one of the treasures Brokk and Sindri made in their contest with the Sons of Ivaldi. When Baldr was burned on his funeral ship, Freyr came to the pyre riding it — or, as Snorri tells it, in a chariot it drew. It is also known by another name, Slíðrugtanni.

It belongs to Freyr, who also owns Skidbladnir.
