Gram, the Sword of Sigurd

Gram is the sword of the hero Sigurd, the greatest blade of the Volsung legends. Reforged by the smith Regin, it split an anvil in two, and with it Sigurd killed the dragon Fafnir.

What is Gram?

Gram is the sword of the hero Sigurd, the greatest blade of the Volsung legends. Its broken shards were reforged by the smith Regin so keenly that Sigurd could split an anvil in two, and lay the sword in a stream to sever a tuft of wool that merely drifted against its edge.

Gram and the dragon

With Gram, Sigurd slew the dragon Fafnir and won the cursed hoard and the ring Andvaranaut. The sword ties the world of the gods to the world of mortal heroes, and shows how the doom woven for Ragnarok reaches down into the sagas of men.

It was first Sigmund's sword; the hoard it won held Andvaranaut.
